BETHANY COMMUNITY OUTREACH EMERGENCY FOOD BANK
Our First Hero for a Day is an incredible organisation that feeds in excess of 650 families in Erdington and Sutton Coldfield EVERY MONTH! In 2016 with their partners and volunteers they helped 5,049 people in the community. That figure more than doubled in their second year and it continues to rise.
Their clients are from all backgrounds and walks of life, from professionals to the homeless and they are a daily reminder that a simple change in circumstances means it could be any one of us. Referrals are made via Social Services, Police, Prison Services, Local Refuges, Churches and similar agencies. An authorised voucher is issued by the referee which in turn is checked by the front desk of the food-bank. A series of questions are then asked so that the appropriate food parcel can be made up.
Their customers visiting for the first time can feel a range of emotions, shame, guilt and they ensure that they are treated with respect and made to feel at ease as soon as possible. They are offered a warm drink, a bite to eat and a chat if they want to talk to somebody.
Bethany Community Outreach began as a food bank but often help out with furniture, clothing and toys too. They are currently housed on a rolling three month lease which means it is difficult to plan for the future. Their volunteers are people of all ages who offer a friendly non judgemental service.
HOW CAN YOU HELP THEM?
They have a shopping list that we may be able to help them with -
A treasurer for the food bank
Someone skilled at writing bids to help attract funds
Someone that can do ad hoc collections and deliveries with a small van
Small businesses that could contribute a monthly sum (£35-£50) to help with electricity bills
